I consider myself a Pastel-ist, preferring this medium for its immediacy, and being influenced by past and present impressionist painters, attempting to produce images that appeal to the emotions rather than the intellect, in a style that is direct and uncluttered.
I am drawn to subject matter that displays natural, yet unusual effects of light and reflection, offering opportunity to explore the use of colour in design. | |
My approach is to build representational work on abstract pattern. I then edit and interpret these natural phenomenon in an attempt to deliver a strong composition.
My choice of subject matter is driven by one of 3 elements:
Colour relationships, a chance juxtaposition of two colours may lead to a new painting based on this combination.
Abstract pattern, underlying design is the key to all interesting paintings, and how the main shapes stack up will often determine whether I pursue a subject or not.
The effects of light, combine the above with vivid reflections, sparkling sunlight and interesting shadow areas, then no matter what the content that will be a "must paint" for me.

What is Giclee Printing?: Hugely successful in the USA, the Giclée printing technique has now revolutionised fine art printing in the UK. The term Giclée (which derives from the French verb ‘Gicler’ meaning ‘to squirt’) describes the way ink is delivered to the paper during the printing process. Harnessing both computer and printing technology, the Giclée process gives unbeatable print quality and offers numerous advantages over traditional reproduction methods.
The process begins with a high resolution scan of the original artwork and the resultant digital file is then calibrated to match the choice of output media. Richard’s work is printed onto Somerset Velvet Enhanced Fine Art Paper. This is produced by one of the oldest working paper mills in Europe and is a mould made, acid free 100% cotton 255 g/m² watercolour paper. The reproductions achieve extremely faithful colour renditions making prints almost undetectable from the original piece of artwork in terms of colour, tone, clarity & detail.
