A PLACE IN THE SHADE - Lake Garda
The Original of A Place in the Shade is a Pastel on Ingress Paper. I was inspired to create this image while vacationing in Hotel Guila, Northern Italy. Hotel Guila, a quality tourist hotel butting up to the Shore of Lake Garda had laid this quiet area at the rear of their property for their staff to take a break. The spectacular shadow cast by the palm tree on the plastered building created these exciting patterns. Who wouldn't want to spend a restfull moment

MARINA DEL ESTE
Fly to Malaga, then drive approximately 80 kilometres east along the coastal highway and you will arrive at the village of La Heredura. Beyond a headland of rock is the incredibly beautiful Marina Del Este. Until recently this was a small fishing village but is now rising in popularity with wealthy boat owners from around the world, both the marina and the surrounding hills have been developed for this tourist market, but very tastefully done. Away from the peak times the Marina is quiet and unspoilt, and as road access leads only to this location and parking is strictly controlled the area is a place of calm and contemplation. The facilities are minimal, a laundrette, diving school, of course an art gallery, and a few restaurants, which line the edge of the marina. Outside seating is superb for the climate and brightly coloured parasols make the scene vibrant. The white rendered buildings give an excellent backdrop to the colours and the gentle movement of the harbour surface fracture these colours to create a wonderful effect for the artist. Moored boats have a natural calming quality, and to sit and study their reflection and lulling movement is one of life's simple pleasures. I enjoyed creating these pastel images, I believe they demonstrate that a limited pallet and complimentary hues can produce striking pictures.

THE GRAND CANAL FROM RIALTO
Venice, the Grand Canal and the Rialto Bridge, is there a more well known location in the world? Maybe some equals but the number of visitors that cross this bridge can be second to none. It’s not possible to paint at this site hardly any room to take a photograph, but I did. When we visited Venice in June 2003 the temperature reached a sweltering 40 degrees, my wife rested on the steps of Rialto while I fought for space to take in the atmosphere and unique view from this most famous of locations. However the suffering was worth the experience and I just had to try and capture some of the magic this place conjures. My lasting impression was the bustle of the city and although my visit was just fleeting I stored a wealth of memories. To recapture this experience, at a later date, I attempted to keep the image busy and impressionistic, relying on feel and memory more then photographic reference. The pastel painting is loose and quickly recorded to keep freshness, deciding what to include and exclude was the greatest difficulty.
