Hints and Tips
This is my studio pallet, the layout is not uncommon amongst pastel artist. The first 6 columns are arranged by the colour wheel and from lightest to darkest, top to bottom.
The last 2 columns contain the colours I use most, these are neutral cools and neutral warms. Many of these I make myself, (see pastel making).
As a tonal painter this aides the way I work. Tone is relative to other colours selected so if I choose a pastel that's a little too light or too dark its easy to move down or up the column and find what I'm looking for. This also works for colours, by moving left or right I am able to adjust the colour without changing its tone.
This results in the painting process flowing instead of being interrupted to search for an appropriate pastel.
